There were screams of “it’s cold”, “it’s so cold,” and “it’s so ridiculously cold!” from Waimea College students at their mid-winter swim. On Friday lunch time, around 60 students and a couple of staff braved nine degree waters to try

fire started but it woke up the young child and he woke up his mother,” Craig says. “They were very, very lucky.” But Craig says they still were concerned that there were people in the house when they arrived at about 9am. “Usually, when you arrive at a house fire the occupants are standing outside, but there was no one. We thought there could be people still inside so two crews started kitting up (with breathing apparatus) to go in when we found the mother and her son by the garage.” Craig also says the occupants would have got out of the house, and the fire brigade would have arrived a lot earlier, if the smoke alarms had been working. Two fire crews from Richmond, two from Stoke and one from Nelson took about 30 minutes to extinguish the fire, that destroyed the front of the house and

Nicole’s mother Barbara McRae, who arrived at the house soon after the fire brigade, says her daughter is renting the house and her belongings are not insured. “She’s going to lose everything but you can replace furniture - you can’t replace a life. I’m so relieved everyone is safe.”
Barbara says Nicole also has two-yearold twins and it was fortunate they were not in the house at the time of the fire. Supermarket and bar sell alcohol to minors House & Land. Two Brightwater premises have been caught selling alcohol to a 16 year old. Nelson Police, in conjunction with District Health Board and Liquor Licensing staff, conducted an extensive controlledpurchase operation, checking licensed premises in Nelson City and Tasman District. Thirty-two premises were visited by 16 year old volunteers who attempted to purchase alcohol. No sale was made at 30
sites, however on two occasions the teenagers were sold alcohol – and both of those were in Brightwater. The sales were made at the Brightwater Four Square and the Wanderers Rugby Club bar. Police say both have been spoken to about the breach and a decision on the suspension of their liquor licence is now with the Alcohol Regulatory Licensing Authority. Police alcohol harm preven-
tion sergeant Steve Savage says police had warned that sports clubs would be targeted over the winter months. “There’s no excuse for a club to be lax in its standards. Our view is that these clubs should be extremely vigilant, as they are likely to have younger members around and they need to set a very high standard,” he says. He says the fact that 30 premises refused to sell was encouraging.

She’s only ten years old but Holly Irvine is already ‘quacking’ the big time. The 10 year old Henley School student recently attended the New Zealand Duck Calling Championship in Queenstown and finished ninth in a field filled with adult males. Holly was the only female and the only child to reach the national final, which featured all of the regional winners. Her father Geoff Irvine says everyone was completely blown away by the fact a 10 year old girl was competing at the national final – and that she was good. “There were guys there who have been blowing duck calls for years and here is a 10 year old girl,” he says. Duck calling is a “quirky offshoot” to duck hunting, according to Geoff, who says duck hunting has always been a “family thing”. “We’re really into our duck hunting. She’s come along since she’s been five or six. Little kids can’t obviously use guns so you just teach them how to do duck calling so it makes it fun for

Photo: Phillip Rollo. them.” Geoff says “when you hear a bad one you’ll know” because it’s all squeaky and horrible. “Holly, when she does it, it sounds exactly like a duck. Little kids pick up things really well, but she practices and all of that.” While duck calling is a relatively small hobby in Nelson, down south it was “like a religion”, says Geoff. “It’s huge. It’s really big and they have really big events too.”
Holly says the neighbours know how good she is too. “One time we were calling and there was a duck, and it landed in their pool,” she says. She entered in the school’s talent quest last week, but Holly says some of the students thought it was “a bit weird.” The plan is for Holly to continue entering competitions, but when asked whether she’s content with calling or wanted to get into hunting, she says she would like to do both.

West Coast rubbish to be dumped here Buller will be dumping 3000 tonnes of their rubbish in the Tasman's districts Eve's Valley landfill over the next year – but it's all in the name of collaboration and profit. The Tasman District Council announced last week that the Eve's Valley landfill will be taking 2500-3000 tonnes of refuse from the Buller District Council over the next year. The first load was trucked in from Westport and Reefton last Tuesday and TDC's engineering activity planning manager Dwayne Fletcher says the contract "benefits both parties". Although Dwayne says the financial terms of the contract are confidential, the TDC
is receiving a payment that "exceeds the short-run costs of operating the landfill by quite a lot" and would provide funding for its long-term operating costs. Dwayne says it is also an example of neighbouring councils collaborating to use their resources efficiently. Councils in Canterbury had similar arrangements with Hurunui's Kate Valley landfill, taking refuse from Selwyn, Ashburton Christchurch and Waimakariri. He says there is no risk of Tasman becoming a dump for the rest of the South Island because Nelson City, Marlborough and Grey councils already had large landfills

Utilities Asset Engineer David Stephenson says the new contract represented a small part of the 31,000 tonnes of refuse that is being placed in the landfill annually. He says the second stage of the landfill would be full in four years time when the third stage, which has a projected life of 25 to 50 years, would open.
David says Tasman's waste had decreased significantly in the last six months after it peaked following last year's floods, when "tonnes and tonnes of plaster board and carpet" were dumped in the landfill. He says Tasman and Nelson were also working hard with the Nelson Environment Centre on their waste minimisation project. A pilot recycling programme has been implemented for construction sites, and the centre is working with a small group of households to identify the key sources of food waste and find ways to reduce waste in this area.

In recent weeks we have noticed an increase in boy racer type behaviour on some of our rural roads and as a result these drivers are going to get some intense attention from police until the matter is sorted. The last thing we want is some innocent member of the public being injured or killed by an irresponsible driver showing off to their mates. I’m aware that we also need to protect these young drivers from themselves. In coming weeks we will be doing our level best to stamp out boy racer behaviour and police will be more than happy to impound vehicles or see someone’s car crushed if they refuse to get the message. I’d ask members of the public who see dangerous driving to call police immediately - you could save a life. If we can respond we will. Make sure you get the registration details of the vehicle and note the time and the place. If we can’t locate the vehicle at the time we will always follow up with the owner.

Saxton Stadium will transform from a sporting venue into an art gallery this weekend for the third annual Art Expo Nelson. Art Expo Nelson brings together 120 artists from around the South Island, making it the largest gathering of artists in the Top of the South. “I can’t think of anything else that brings that many artists together in one place. There are a lot of artists from all over the South Island, including one from Invercargill and some from Christchurch and Blenheim,” says project manager Nic Foster. While there are plenty of artists coming from out of town, the majority are still from within the region, and that’s a reflection of how many artists live in Nelson. “There’s something like 400 artists that live in the region and that’s probably one of the highest per capita. It’s a great opportunity for them to get their artwork out there and for people to come along.” Nic says there are plenty of upsides to the Art Expo Nelson. “It gives artists a chance to network with each other

You can go along to soak up the atmosphere, and even you don’t buy anything, you can be inspired.” Nic says there’s always a great vibe at the event, with a cafe/ bar open as well. “People always get excited by this event and the bonus for people is they might walk away with a piece of art that they really love.” First time entrant, Georgia Bar-
ber, says it’s going to be “a head full of fun”. “I’ve not really done anything quite like this before so this is a pretty big deal for me,” she says. “I’m nervous too, but I’ve had a lot of encouragement from James and Gill at The Framing Rooms to go into it this year, and without their support I probably would have lacked the confidence to give it a go. I don’t want to take it too seriously, but I know there will be lots to learn.” Art Expo Nelson opens its doors at 10am on Friday and continues until Sunday.

Fewer flu jabs this winter

Almost 39,000 people in Nelson and Marlborough have lined up for their flu jab this winter, a few thousand fewer than last year. In 2013, 40,775 people had got the influenza immunisation by the end of July. This year 38,630 had done so by the end of June and officials are urging people to get in before the flu season starts later this month. To date, almost 1.18 million flu vaccines have been distributed across the country. This compares to over 1.25 million doses distributed last year. Even though 2013 was one of the mildest influenza seasons in 20 years, 782 people were hospitalised with influenza, says the ministry of health. Nelson Marlborough Medical Officer of Health Dr Ed Kiddle, says influenza immunisation is still available and is free until the end of July, for people over 65 years, people with ongoing health conditions such as asthma, and it is also free for pregnant women. “The flu is not just a cold and can be a serious illness, especially when complicated by pre-existing health conditions. Vaccination covers the three major strains of influenza that are likely to circulate in our community this winter,” says Ed. Associate Health Minister Jo Goodhew is also encouraging anyone who has not yet been immunised against influenza to do so before the winter season peaks in late July to early August. “The vaccine takes up to two weeks to take effect, so now is the time to take action to avoid catching and spreading influenza,” says Jo. Seeking young professionals Rescue boat gets new name Nelson Young Professionals have given themselves a makeover in an effort to attract more members. The events hosted by the networking group have always been popular and attract up to 150 people, despite membership sitting at around 35. So NYP president Michelle Byczkow says it was time to come up with something fresh, so they’ve created a new website, logo and have introduced a membership card scheme. Paid members will now be given membership cards to use for discounts at supporting businesses. Membership now also lasts for 12 months from the date you sign up, rather than just lasting until the end of the current year. “A lot of people were hearing

For the first time in its history, Nelson Coastguard is running a membership drive and what better way to launch it than a fresh name for its main rescue boat. The vessel will now be called Talley’s Rescue 1, after Talley’s agreed to sponsor the coastguard’s rescue boat. It was blessed and renamed at a ceremony on Saturday morning with Nelson mayor, Rachel Reese, and the general manager of Talley’s, Tony Hazlett. Coastguard president Mark Rumsey says it is great to have the support of Talley’s and now they’re asking for the support of regular boaties, via a membership drive.
The volunteer organisation is hoping for 500 new members, each paying an annual fee of $55. That will get them a free boat tow, a quarterly newsletter and the chance to win a Burnsco voucher. Mark says it’s important that the coastguard gets the support of boaties. “We want 500 new members – there’s a hell of a lot more boats than that – but $55 is a pretty fair price and we’re always on the end of a phone or VHF.” For more information about becoming a member of the coastguard visit www.nelsoncoastguard. org.nz.

Richmond volunteer wins national RDA award Janene Bastion loves her volunteer work and now it officially loves her. Janene was recently announced as the national Riding for Disabled Volunteer of the Year award winner. Her work at the Richmond RDA lead to her nomination from the centre. Janene was presented with her medal and trophy at a surprise ceremony, and was visibly shocked and extremely happy when it was announced. President of the Richmond RDA, Alex Robertson, says Janene was a
worthy winner. “She really does it for the kids and goes out of her way to create new games for the children. She’s there almost every day and really has a huge passion for it.” The Richmond RDA has 12 horses on its Champion Rd site and next term will have 65 kids go through it each week. Alex says the win is great news for the whole centre and shows what great work is being done. “It makes a huge difference for these kids and Janene and all our other volunteers and staff are the reason why.”

Southern Link: The debate over the Southern Link goes a lot further than the road. Tahunanui is Nelson City’s beach and the waterfront views between the City and the Tahunanui shops are nothing short of spectacular. Pedestrian access in the form of a promenade to this area, alongside a quiet suburban road which has traffic calming measures and can carry cyclists safely would provide a much needed economic boost to Nelson City. As a former tourist accommodation provider, this is a concept I would recommend guests spend an extra night in Nelson to experience. It will contribute to the health of all Nelsonians and provide a recreational facility for all residents. Let’s get started! Cynthia McConville. Garin College gets behind foodbank Specialist gun shop opening soon
St Vincent de Paul’s foodbank in Richmond received a timely boost when students at Garin College donated 1550 food items for the charity’s shop. It was the second year that Garin has made a donation to the foodbank, after dropping off 1000 items last year. Now the school’s pastoral chaplain Paul Traynor, who initiated the project, says they are aiming to hit 2000 next year. “We started it as part of a service initiative so our students can go out and help people in the com-
munity,” Paul says. “It’s a practical way for them to live their Christian values.” St Vincent’s de Paul’s Richmond shop manager Margaret Pattison, says the charity buys most of the items for their foodbank so the donation is very generous. The foodbank is the only one in Richmond and is always busy, helping “four or five families” every week. Margaret says food donations can be made at the St Vincent’s de Paul shop at 11A McGlashen Ave, on weekdays from 10am to 4pm.

A speciality gun store will be opening in Motueka this month. The father and son team of Neil and James Simpson have been working at Stirling Sports in Richmond for the past four years. But with decades of shooting knowledge the pair decided the time was right to open a specialist gun store. The new venture thought to be the only specialist gun store in the region. Neil says they’ve have a great range of stock and will have plenty of knowledge to pass on to those keen for a tip or two.

Senior cooking classes take off A cooking class for seniors, being trialled in Richmond, is proving so popular there’s already a waiting list for the next one. Senior Chef is a national programme aimed at helping people of 65 and over improve their cooking skills. It was initiated as part of a Ministry of Health project in Christchurch, to improve nutritional wellbeing of older people, and now the eight-week course is being trialled at the Headingly Centre. Organiser Annette Nistor says she and Leanne Craig went to Christchurch earlier this year to have a first-hand look at Senior Chef and were so impressed they decided to run one in the Nelson-Tasman region. They secured funding for the course from the Primary Health Organisation and the Community Health Group, and finished their final three-hour session last Thursday. “It’s been very popular and a lot of fun,” Annette says. “Usually, they recommend classes of seven or eight, but we have 13 and there’s already a waiting list for the next one.” Annette says Senior Chef was implemented in response to studies that showed a high proportion of older people living in the community were not eating properly. She says that eating alone, and difficulty

with cooking, are two of the main contributing factors to poor nutrition in the elderly, and the course is designed help overcome these barriers. “I’m a dietician but I’m doing this because I’m passionate about helping people who are socially isolated in the community. Poor nutrition can be a real problem among older people, and it will only get worse as our population ages and elderly choose to remain independent and in their own homes,” she says. The course covers a wide range of subjects including nutrition education, menu planning, budgeting, shopping tips and preparing and cooking meals. Richmond-Waimea RSA welfare advisor Robin Godbaz says he and his wife Jill, who is the RSA secretary, are very impressed by the course and will

be recommending it to their older members. “I thought I’d give it a trial run to see if it was a good idea for our members and it’s been absolutely brilliant. A lot of our members are elderly and on their own so it would be perfect for them,” Robin says. Annette says they have been able to run the course free of charge thanks to the funding and also support from Grace Church and businesses around the district. Grace Church provides the kitchen and dining room without cost, Joyes Dental Service have donated 13 cookbooks to the course worth $10 each and the vegetables are donated by a local market gardener. Well, I can tell you exactly how much you’re worth. I know your value, because I know how much someone was willing to pay for you. The Bible says: “God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And the ransom He paid was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God”. God paid a price for you. The price he paid was his very own Son Jesus Christ. You and I were slaves to sin but God paid a ransom to get us back. He sent to Earth his Son Jesus Christ, who lived a perfect life, then he Matthew Grant. died on a cross taking the punishment for the bad things we have done. They took his body down from the cross and buried it in a tomb, but three days later he rose from the dead to prove to us that He really is the Saviour of the world. It doesn’t matter if you’re good or bad, male or female, black or white, rich or poor; God loves you so much that he gave his son for you. This makes you of equal value to all other human beings who have ever lived you’re as valuable as Mozart, or Madonna, or Martin Luther King. In the world it seems if you’re rich, famous, good looking or talented then you’re worth more than other people. But this is not how God sees things. God doesn’t have a pecking order. He places the same value on everybody. Jesus didn’t die for a select group of people. He died for everyone. This means he died for you! This means if you believe in him, you will not perish, but will have everlasting life.

Four female trainee pilots from Papua New Guinea have been able to get out and about for some sightseeing around the Tasman district this week thanks to the generosity of Village Cycles. Selina Kule, Gail Rivu, Marie Auka and Siolima Walo are based in Motueka where they are two months into a 68-week course at the Nelson Aviation School. The young women were awarded places on their government’s inaugural Female Pilot Scholarship programme and are training to become commercial pilots. So far it’s been all work and no play for the students but that changed when the school closed for a two week holiday on June 27. And Jim Matthews at Village Cycles has done his bit to help the visitors get around on their holiday by donating transport in the form of four second hand bikes. “They are walking around Motueka at the moment so we thought we’d get them some bikes so they can do some sight-seeing in the holidays,” Nelson Aviation School chief executive Giles Witney says. “I’ve brought a few bikes off Jim over the years so I approached him and he leaped at

Photo: Simon Bloomberg. the opportunity to help.” Marie says they are all enjoying their new home and are looking forward to exploring the district on bikes during the holidays although they will all be wrapping up warm for their rides. “It’s a very friendly and safe and welcoming place but we are still trying to get used to the cold,” Marie says. Marie says they are also enjoying their studies which are part of the PNG Central Provincial Government’s scholarship programme aimed at improving gender equality. “There are not many females in the aviation industry back in Papua New Guinea or in other professions so this is a good initiative,” she says.
Giles says the students were awarded the scholarships after a long selection process that involved interviews with Nelson Aviation School chief flying instructor Jeremy Anderson and assessors from PNG’s national airline Air Niugini. “We’ve had a strong relationship with Air Niugini for the last four years so when we heard about the opportunity to train these girls we approached the Government,” Giles says. “It’s working very well and the girls are progressing really quickly.” Giles says the students will have their private pilot’s licence, commercial pilot’s licence and a multi-engine instrument rating when they complete their course next year.

Free Parking One week after the introduction of the free parking policy in the city, Nelson Weekly hit the streets to hear what shoppers and retailers thought of the move. Most said it has already had a positive
impact on the city. Many of the shoppers spoken to say while they usually did their shopping in Nelson anyway, it was a much nicer experience without having to worry about

I think customers are more relaxed about not rushing back to their cars, I think it’s going really well.” Office worker Tony Morgan says he parks in a space paid for by his work but he believes the scheme is a good idea. "I’ve come in from Stoke and I think it will bring people into the city, I think it’s a very good idea." Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says free parking is about providing a winter boost for the city centre. "Business owners represent a significant slice of our community. For the month's of July, August and September car parking in Nelson city is free. Nelson City Council decided to give the idea a three month trial to see if it would invigorate the city and its struggling retailers. The free parking will be for the applicable time limit on that car park, to a maximum of three hours. The central area of Wakatu Square will remain as all day paid parking, while the one hour parking spaces around the edge of the square will be free. The trial period will run from 1 July until 30 September 2014.

Trophy comp a highlight for deerstalkers The New Zealand Deerstalkers’ Association annual trophy competition will be a highlight of their annual conference starting in Nelson on Friday, but there will be some key discussions on game management and research on the agenda as well. NZDA members from throughout the country will be bringing their biggest, and in some cases most unusual, trophies to the conference for the annual Antler, Horn and Tusk competition. Nelson branch president Morgan Rogers says the trophies are always one of the talking points of the conference and they will be open to the public at the Suburban Club on Sunday from 12pm to 1pm. “We will also have many of our treasured trophies that were hunted by world famous hunting legends being transported out of our lodge at Lake Rotoiti on display,” Morgan says. “These trophy heads are enormous and will truly be a sight to see.” However, Morgan says the conference will also be focusing on the association’s partnerships with the Department of Conservation and their role on the newly formed Game Animal Council. It will also be updating members on the association’s role in a number of game animal research projects being conducted around the country. Morgan says NZDA collaborates with DOC on a number of projects in Nelson including controlling goat populations in the Mt Richmond Forest Park. He says DOC provides training and helicopters for hunters to go into the park and cull goats and the partnership is working very well. The use of 1080 poison in sensitive areas like Kahurangi National Park will also be on the agenda at the conference and Morgan says they are keen to promote alternative methods of controlling possums. The Minister of Conservation Nick Smith and director general of conservation Lou Sanson will be at the conference so it will be a good opportunity to discuss their views on 1080. The conference will also discuss NZDA’s role on the Game Animal Council which was formed late last year. Morgan says the council was formed to manage and control “game animal herds of special interest” as a resource rather than treating them as pests that need to be eradicated. The conference starts at the Suburban Club at 7.30pm on Friday and continues through until Sunday. About 100 delegates from the association’s 51 branches are expected to attend.

Standing the Test of Time Höglund Glassblowing Studio is a Nelson icon which has been welcoming visitors for 33 years. It’s also high on the “must do” list of activities in the region. Many locals bring out-of-town guests just to see the look of awe on their faces and it is always a pleasure to browse in the gallery. There is something very mesmerising about the art of glassblowing and it is a rare privilege to see accomplished artists at work in this field. Waimea West Joinery has come a long way since Alan Gibbs started the business 26 years ago. Alan was a one-man-band when he opened up his small workshop in Brightwater but it wasn’t long before he employed Greg Biggs and an apprentice Ryan Horncastle to keep up with the growing demand. After four years they moved to a new workshop on Beach Road. Today, Waimea West Joinery employs 11 staff including Alan’s wife Kathy, son Blake and daughter Rebecca. Kathy is a key member of the team managing the office and designing kitchens while Blake is a qualified joiner who operates the computer cutting machine they purchased three years ago. “Kathy’s the boss,” Alan says. “She consults with our clients and designs the kitchens, manages the accounts, does the pricing and manages the office.” Although Waimea West “does everything”, they specialise in manufacturing joinery for architecturally-designed houses. Their reputation as craftsman joiners was enhanced last month when they won the Best Door or Window Award at the National Master Joiners Awards for an oak door they made for a house in Atawhai. A Blind Faith? Blind faith can be defined as belief without true understanding. We might be accused of blind faith in corporations looking after workers. We might be accused of having blind faith in our political system. We might be accused of having blind faith in God. One of the aspects of God is he’s so big that we cannot fully understand him but many learned writers publish books claiming without compromise both his non existence and existence. Where does this leave me, is my faith in God blind? I think I can draw a parallel with what I would do if we had a problem with the wiring in our house. I would know it wasn’t working properly but I don’t have the knowledge or skills to sort it out. I’d seek expert help. I am not an expert in investigation and evaluating the quality of arguments, but others are
and people I trust can point me to books or resources to learn more. I am and have been convinced by the evidence in the Bible, as have been many others before me, this means that my belief is based on understanding — it is not blind, but I do need to turn to those with special skills to help me grow in understanding. No one is an expert on all the challenges the Bible presents. New warrant of fitness changes - keep your car safe Changes to the LTSA rules brought into effect from 1 July mean that cars manufactured from 2000 onward will only require a Warrant of Fitness every 12 months. Those in the industry are concerned that this will lead to vehicles being driven that are not meeting minimum standards, or have faulty or worn parts making them a danger to those driving them and others on the road. While responsible vehicles owners may keep up with regular services, many will not be able to recognise when their car is not performing at its best, or even safely. “With the new rulings, the onus of vehicle fitness will fall on the owner,” says Richmond Vehicle Testing Station owner, Barry Andrews. “The vast majority of people I have spoken to are not happy with the change. They aren’t confident that they can ensure their vehicles are meeting legal requirements and they don’t want to be responsible for things like making sure that their tyres have the legal amount of tread, and that the brake pads are still good.” That’s where RVTS can help with their new half yearly safety check. This new test will only cost $25 and will cover checking lights, wipers, windscreens, suspension, tyres and brakes – giving you an assurance that your car is safe and legal.

College players show support for clubs It looked more like an interclub training session than a Waimea College one, but Wednesday’s practice was a chance for the Press Cup players to show their support for their junior rugby clubs. Every year players from the Waimea College first XV are welcomed to wear their club colours to one of the training sessions. Like last year, the majority were representing Wanderers and Waimea, although there were three from Moutere club Rangers as well.
As well as being a fun exercise, coach Daniel Hobbs says it’s a chance to recognise where the first XV players have come from and will go on to. “It’s about them being proud of the clubs they came from and it’s a way of recognizing the input those clubs had for these players,” he says. Waimea College has won just one game this season – and lost again on the weekend to St Bede’s College 44-5. Although there have been some positives, including a
tight 16-10 loss to defending champions Marlborough Boys’ College, and leading Timaru Boys’ High School at half time. So while Daniel admits it has been a frustrating campaign, particularly on defence where Waimea College has leaked the most points in the competition, the goal for the rest of the season is to “get some pride and enjoyment back” in the team. “We are better than the results are showing and we can’t fault the effort.”

Daniel Perrin is confident that Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers can turn around Saturday’s shock loss to Kahurangi, by beating them this weekend. The 26-17 loss at Sports Park Motueka means Kahurangi sneak past Galbraith Nelson into fourth place, sealing the final playoff spot. While many would argue that it gives Wanderers an easier run in the semi-final this Saturday, player-coach Daniel says he would rather have played Nelson “after putting 60 points on them a couple of weeks ago”. Wanderers haven’t had the most ideal run in to the playoffs, with Moutere defaulting two weeks ago and then the loss to Kahurangi, but
they still deservedly finished top of the table after the round robin, with eight wins, one draw and one loss to their name. “We haven’t had too many games, teams keep defaulting against us so it’s been frustrating in that regard, but the boys are eager to get out there,” says Daniel. And despite the loss on the weekend, he was confident a fully-fit Wanderers squad can do the job when it counts this weekend. “I think the boys were pretty disappointed in themselves and they’ll look to right a few wrongs.” The semi final between Wanderers and Kahurangi kicks off at the Brightwater Domain at 3pm.

Tasman girls lose opener
Tasman is hoping the merger of three regions can push them into a top eight spot at the National Association Under-18 girls’ hockey tournament at Saxton Field this week. Having previously entered as Nelson, Marlborough and Buller, the three areas have joined together for this tournament to form a Tasman team. The merger came after Buller and Marlborough had been struggling for numbers, and
has resulted in three extra players for the predominantly Nelson-based side. “We’ve got 13 girls from the Nelson district, two from Buller and one from Marlborough, but previously they’d played under their own associations,” explains manager David Harris. “The two other areas were short on numbers but it’s created a little bit more depth for us.” David says the team’s goal was to finish inside the top eight. “We’ve had some really good

Super Liquor Waimea Old Boys will come up against Collingwood in the semi-finals of the Car Company division two competition, after the Golden Bay side snuck ahead of Riwaka. A venue for the game was to be decided last night, but will either be at Jubilee Park or Trafalgar Park – the latter giving the Bs a chance to play the curtain raiser to the division one semi-final between Waimea Old Boys and Marist if they choose to. Waimea Old Boys co-coach Wayne Bateman says his preference would be for the match to be played at Jubilee Park, as it would give them a true home ground advantage. “To me, I’d like a home game. We qualified second so this is our home game. If we go to Trafalgar Park then it’s neutral ground. But we’ve just got to see, we’ll have a chat with the team tonight,” Wayne said yesterday afternoon. Despite beating Collingwood 27-7 earlier in the season and being firm favourites, he says the “country boys” will be a tough opponent, and one they can’t take lightly. “They would be the top country side in this competition. The country boys are always a bit tougher, they never give up mate,” he says. “You’ve got to be confident though and I’m sure they will be too. It’s just one of those things heading into a semi-final.” Waimea Old Boys will be well rested after having the bye on the weekend, and Wayne says there were still some “niggly” injuries that were being treated. “But we’ll be right.” Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers will face Riwaka in the other match, and Wayne expects Wanderers to win that. Waimea Old Boys reached the final last year, but were beaten by one point by Murchison. Murchison had to pull out at the start of the season due to insufficient player numbers, meaning no matter what, there will be a new name on the trophy in 2014.

But Wakatu Marist captain Shawn Begg says the defending champions should still be favourites ahead of this Saturday’s Car Company division one semi-final. “They’ve got a lot more players than they did at the start of the season so it’ll be a different Waimea team, but we’ve beaten them twice this season,” he says. “They’re definitely the team to beat in the finals though, they’re stacked all over the park.” But Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys co-coach Mark Milne believes his side are the underdogs, and their record against Marist proves it. “I can’t see how we can be favourites if they’ve beaten us twice. They ran straight through us. In those two games we just weren’t up to the mark and if we’re not up to the mark again this weekend we’ll be in trouble again,” says Mark. “I don’t read so much into the performances they’ve had over the past couple of weeks. We’ll both claim underdog status, but on the back of two wins against us they have to go in as favourites.” Waimea Old Boys head into the semi-final on a eight game winning streak, that includes knocking over Tasman Trophy winners Waitohi on Saturday. The game against Waitohi was a bruising encounter, but the perfect warm-up for a do-or-die semi-final. “We were pretty pleased with the workout we got. It was more about the physical contest that we had, rather than the result. That gets us on track for the semi-final.” This Saturday’s semi-final will be held at Trafalgar Park, kicking off at 3pm. The other semi-final between Wanderers and Kahurangi will be played at the Brightwater Domain.

Public Notices Submissions called for on reserve land proposal Tasman District Council is calling for submissions under the Reserves Act 1977, on its intention to declare a small area of freehold land at Mapua a Local Purpose (Walkway) Reserve. The Council is the owner of an existing Local Purpose Reserve at Aranui Road. This land is Lot 28 DP 17242 (3020m2), and is a walkway which runs between Aranui Road and the sea. When land adjacent to this Reserve was subdivided, a small area of land was offered to the Council as an addition to the Reserve. Due to technicalities in the subdivision process, the land was vested in the Council as freehold land. This land is Lot 1 DP 472570 (184m2). It is not a Reserve at this time, but Section 14 of the Reserves Act allows the Council to declare it to be Reserve, unless objections are sustained following public notification. If the freehold land becomes a Reserve, it will still be subject to all existing encumbrances on the title (easements and building covenants). The proposal is to amalgamate the titles of Lot 28 DP 17242 and Lot 1 DP 472570 when they are both Local Purpose (Walkway) Reserves. The proposal should have no impact on the physical use of either land parcel. Users of the walkway will not notice any difference if Lot 1 DP 472570 is made a Reserve and amalgamated with the adjacent existing Reserve. It is an administrative tidy up to allow land with the same physical use to be held in the same land title, with the same Reserve status. Plans of the existing Reserve and proposed addition to that Reserve can obtained by contacting Robert Cant on Ph. 03 543 8400, or via Email: robert.cant@tasman.govt.nz. Copies of this notice, plus plans will also be available on the Council’s website. Please state whether you would like to speak to your submission in the event that a hearing is required.
Public Notices Public Notice of Alcohol Licensing Applications Applications for new and renewed alcohol licences are now being publicly advertised on the Council’s website. The use of a website for public notices is allowed under the new Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act, and is good for the community and for businesses. The public notices remain accessible to everyone online rather than just appearing sporadically in the local newspaper. This allows the community to view the public notices at their leisure on the website. There are also links and information for people wanting to object to an application. Site notices will still be displayed on the premises to alert the public to an application. Businesses applying for an alcohol licence will benefit from this service as it eliminates the expense of advertising. This is welcome as the fees for licences have generally increased across the board.
